Katie Ellen Puris, a former managing director at TikTok, has filed a lawsuit against TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, in a New York federal court. Puris alleges discrimination and retaliation, citing instances of mistreatment and inappropriate behavior within the company.

Chairman’s Alleged ‘Kill List’: Puris claims that Lidong Zhang, the chairman of ByteDance, maintained an ’employee kill list’ targeting certain employees, including herself. She alleges that this list led to her marginalization within the company and ultimately contributed to her termination in September 2022.

Discriminatory Views on Women: According to the lawsuit, Zhang held stereotypical views on how women should behave in the workplace. Puris, as one of the senior-most female executives in the US, was allegedly criticized for not conforming to these stereotypes. Zhang and other executives purportedly believed that Puris did not exhibit the expected level of docility and meekness.

Failure to Address Sexual Harassment: The complaint also alleges that TikTok failed to respond appropriately when Puris reported instances of sexual harassment. She claims to have been sexually harassed by a marketing company worker in France in 2022, highlighting the company’s inadequate handling of the situation.

Impact on Puris: Puris asserts that the stress and pressure resulting from her inclusion on Zhang’s ‘kill list’ adversely affected her health and well-being. The lawsuit portrays a hostile work environment in which Puris felt marginalized and unsupported.
