Elon Musk’s Twitter Acquisition Spurred by Dispute Over @ElonJet Account, Reveals New Book

In a revelation from Bloomberg’s Kurt Wagner’s upcoming book titled ‘Battle for the Bird,’ it’s disclosed that Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal’s refusal to remove the handle @ElonJet, tracking Elon Musk’s private jet, played a pivotal role in Musk’s eventual acquisition of Twitter and its parent company.

The account, managed by American programmer Jack Sweeney, was reportedly a source of annoyance for Musk, who sought its removal in January 2022. Agrawal’s denial of this request spurred Musk’s decision to purchase Twitter stock, leading him to cross paths with co-founder Jack Dorsey. Musk’s failed attempt to secure a board seat prompted him to pursue outright ownership of Twitter, culminating in a $44 billion acquisition in October of the same year.

Following the acquisition, Musk ousted Agrawal, who was the first Indian-origin CEO of the tech giant, along with other executives. Despite the removal of the @ElonJet handle, Sweeney continues to post travel data of Musk’s plane on other social media platforms.
